Hello Team Riverlea. I just wanted to let you know that the web site looks great! I love all the photos. I hope I'll be able to follow Dan and my dad's progress on their dream-ride! Just to make you all a little jealous, I'll be watching the end of the Tour de France on July 23 from the balcony of my apartment. The final leg into Paris comes zipping along the street I live on. I think you guys should organize a trip over here so we can go biking in the Loire valley. Take care, and please be careful (especially you, Dad).

The short-awaited time has arrived! Mackenzie Eryn Mangette was born July 4, 2000 at 11:14 am. She is a beautiful little girl with a head full of black hair. She weighed in at 7lb 15 oz, and measured 20 in. Turns out she is a very loud, impatient person. She was born 25 minutes after reaching the hospital, and she came into the world kicking and screaming. Both, mother and daughter, are doing fine, and are home now. Haley is a proud big sister and loves to hold her sister. We hope to be returning to the biking scene soon. Take care.

Dear Dan, I'm enjoying following your progress. Kansas can be a nice experience if you let it be. Not many people stop in those little towns except bicyclists. So they are happy to see us. We had a wonderful trip in Michigan this summer. Maybe you and Al will join us next summer for a mini-trip. Mike Cardi joined us this summer and he has biked Kansas also. I will pass your website info on to him. Glad to see you are doing so well. Come to the seminar next spring and share your experiences. Enjoy your adventure and have fun. My best, (bicycle) me

Dear Dan,Kay,Al and Jane, Glad to hear you're in Berea! Enjoy your honeymoons! Dan and Al it has been great fun "travlin' with you"...Dan, as I was trying to type this I hit something wrong and the first thing I saw on the screen was "Reagan in Love"...how did you do that? Weather in Canton is cool today...maybe the 70's but it doesn't feel quite that warm. Chris thank you for providing this great message board...I feel like I've gone cross country on a bike and met lots of new people! And, Bob, to me you are an "anchor"...its good to read your steady advice and to know that you are helping to navigate this "Reverse Lewis and Clark 2000"! Hard to believe we'll only get to do this for two more weeks!...How about retracing your wheel path Dan and Al?...just kidding, Kay and Jane. Love and prayers as you continue onward...and its sounds like...upward!

Good morning! Guess our last message was lost in the Great Vowel Escape! When I was writing that message I hit a wrong key or something and the first thing I saw on my screen when it came up was "Reagan in Love"...How'd you do that Dan? Thank you, Chris, for this great site...its been fun "riding along across the country with Dan and Al"...not being the athletic types, we like the "virtual ride". And Bob, its been very reassuring to read your research/advice as they move forward into new territories. Our prayers are with you RIDERS OF 2000 as you complete your journey and dip those wheels into the Atlantic...Thanks for sharing your GREAT ADVENTURE!

It is almost Christmas! I am back in Brazil, working, but also riding my bike and always thinking about our Sunday rides. It is very hilly around here, and it is necessary to have mountain bikes because of the terrain. The view is wonderful from the top of the hills. I had to put very knobby tires to be able to ride safely here! I want to wish a Merry Christmas for the team! I hope to ride with Team Riverlea again early in the New Century! Happy 2001!!! Denise

Hey Team. I hope TOSRV went well. Sorry I haven't been able to ride recently. School has been keeping me pretty busy. Senior year is pretty hectic. But I hope to be on the bike next Sunday, and to continue ridding after that. So I hope everyone had a good TOSRV experience, Nice weather! (That's a first) So, I look forward to hearing about it Sunday. Have a good week. -Zach

Thanks to all who made Olivia's first TOSRV a great success! I'll try and post some pictures soon, although with Olivia snapping the shots off the back of a wobbly tandem, I can't promise focus.

FYI - a few folks have asked me about purchasing bikes online - I bought both the tandem and my single that way. There was an article in the Dispatch today about a new/old service that presents online classifieds - http://groups.google.com. If you click on "rec.", then "rec.bicycles.", then "rec.bicycles.marketplace" you'll find a searchable bulletin board of bike stuff for sale all over the country. I can't promise there aren't ripoffs lurking here, but on the whole it seems pretty good. Good hunting!

So now that the TOSRV challenge has been firmly wrestled to the ground I think Gregg, Mike and Ralph need a new goal. I propose the Columbus Fall Challenge - 9/29-30. Rated "10+", and it's no exaggeration. The scenery is spectacular, and at times you can even look up to enjoy it. Good prep for the TeamR Fall Ride too! More lobbying to follow...

Thanks again to the Team for allowing Lois and I to join the TOSRV festivities.Clearly one of the highlights of the biking season. This Tosrv was just about perfect, great company, good weather, and I swear the wind turned around Sunday.I'd like to invite any of you who have an inclination to do a semi- challenging ride to be my house guest on June 9th for Sunday in June, June 10, starting in Burton. Ride anywhere from 25-100 mi through the rolling hills of Amish country. It's fun and beautiful.Just give me a call at 216-241-5210 and we'll work out details. REGARDS TO ALL Larry

Thought I'd sign in to let you know we still exist over here in Dublin. Haven't been on the bikes since TOSRV, but will be again soon. I hope to have Haley on the back of the tandem soon. Kay and I have been discussing the possibility of reviving the "Tour de BBQ Chicken" ride on July 4th. The distance would have to be cut down greatly since we both haul children now. We'll probably make it between 20 & 30 miles. We can adjust the time according to when the chicken is served. Please email, or call (793-3376) if you are interested.      Hello all, Great ride today and where were you Zack? I hope some of you remember my plea on the morning of the breakfast in Feb., to get some help for the Covered Bridge Century. COP needs some help on this important CFC training ride and I had asked if anyone might be interested in lending a hand. The work would be 90% beforehand and the date is Sept 8. We would definitely get the chance to ride, this is a budget tour and there is no SAG. This is the first training ride for CFC that COP does in the fall. Please give me a call, 785-6583, if you might have some time for this. We will do route planning from historic maps and marking of the roads. I will volunteer to take the registrations and hand out stuff the morning of the ride.

(Mountain training)(Dan, for CFC of course) I have been ridding with the boys down at OSU, well mostly just the coach. But I've been working with him. Tonight I'm going ridding with some CAT 1&2 guys. Most of them raced in the Wendy's classic last week. So, we'll see how that goes. But I won't be seeing you guys for a while.      New pictures! Just 5 short months in the works... News, let's see: Sunday rides are going strong (8:00a.m. Alum Dam lower lot), with a good regular contingent. Saturday early a.m. rides are gaining in popularity - from the Village Green at first light if for some reason you don't know what to do with yourself at 6:00a.m. on a Saturday.

2001 Columbus Fall Challenge (CFC) is gaining interest too - Team R may field as many as 8 riders for some or all of the two day event. Zach Smith is training in the Arizona mountains, and Ann Henderson is training in the White Mountains of New Hampshire this week - some clue that this is no small undertaking! Look for more training ride updates and links soon.

Here is a change for the Sunday AM team Riverlea ride. Instead of meeting at Alum Creek we will meet Oct 7, Sunday, in my driveway at 9AM, an hour later than normal, and ride to the OSU football stadium where John Schilling will conduct a private tour. We will continue down the bike path to downtown, find a breakfast place and return. See ya Sunday and then the following Saturday for "The Fall Ride".

Hey guys, here's one to consider. In the current COP newsletter is mentioned a bide ride on Jan l, leaving at llAM from the Bob Evans on the west side of Sawmill rd just south of 270. Assuming good conditions (no rain, sleet or snow) could we consider this an event? Let me know.

Name: Dan

A change from the above. The COP ride starts at llAM and by joining that one we would miss most of the OSU bowl game. Lets try for Alum Creek at 9AM but the weather report is not close to good. Lets guess that we will start if the temp is 30F or better. Stay tuned.

Sunday! Weather is supposed to be cold to start - maybe low 30's, but then warm up. I know we need the miles... My dad is doing well - should be home Saturday or Sunday. Won't be with us for a few Sundays, but still hoping for TOSRV.

Tomorrow's ride may be cold and possibly wet. Again use your judgement as to whether you are willing to suffer now or on TOSRV. I wont be able to leave a message in the morning but I'll probably be at the start regardless of the weather and decide then whether to ride or drive to breakfast.

Saturday Ride, March 30th As an alternative to the Easter Sunday ride I am organizing a ride to the Dutch Kitchen and points beyond this coming Saturday, March 30th. We will meet in the Witco parking lot (west of Frantz Road) at 9:00 a.m. I would like to ride 40-50 miles, depending upon the weather. Breakfast stop at the Dutch Kitchen around the halfway mark. *Disclaimer* Ride organizer is not responsible for poor weather, including snow which plagues this area AFTER winter is officially over, and for illness from eating a whole cinnamon roll, or part thereof.

Date:    3/29/02
For those team members not riding to the Dutch Kitchen with John Schilling tomorrow, the Easter ride is available on Sunday. We will meet in Canal Winchester, behind the old Shade's restaurant in the municiple parking lot in the center of town at 9:00 am. To get there take Rt 33 south east towards Lancaster, exit at the Canal Winchester off ramp turn right and then take the first left (by the gas station) to get into the small business district a few miles down the road. You can then find the parking lot easily from there. The weather may be a factor again, so use your best judgement. The ride is about 46 miles with some hills on the way back from Lancaster. See you there.

Busy weekend with family in town, so my cycling needs to fly under the radar. I think a few folks are planning a 7 a.m. ride from the Village Green Saturday (2-3 hours max), and Sunday I'll probably try something similar - an hour or two of early riding from the dam, and then maybe an hour with the group before I head back.

Name: Al

Tomorrows ride is from the dam to Cardington and back (about 52 miles). It is basically a north/south direction and flat. Remember the time change tonight. See you at the dam at 9am DST and dress warmly.

This week's ride is the Laurelville Ride. It is a very hilly but beautiful loop. The starting point is the parking lot on the northwest corner of route 33 and 180 just north of Logan. It takes about an hour to drive to the start. Lets hope for clear weather again but minus the wind of last week's return trip.

We are planning on riding on Saturday, the 27th, to the Dutch Kitchen. Starting at 9:00 am from Witco at the corner of Rings Road and Frantz Road in Dublin.      This Sunday's ride was listed as a question mark on our training schedule because we weren't sure if COP was holding the 28th Mid-Ohio Century. Apparently they are as a budget tour, so lets meet at Olentangy High School ready to ride at 8:00am. Lets hope for drier and warmer than last week.

I put up a notice on the tosrv bulletin board too.

As Ann mentioned, I'm coming down for another TOSRV with the Riverlea people, but this time, I'm sans Joy (and tandem, although we now have an upgraded tandem from the now-defunct Ibis Co) and the kids. I'll be on my single. Anyway, I'm looking for someone interested in sharing the cost of a room on Sat night. Any takers?

As we know the Manguette's are graciosly hosting the pre-TOSRV dinner this year. If you are unsure what to bring please check with Doug and Kay at 793-2276. We also have two options for transporting your gear down to Piketon. You can either bring your things to Doug and Kay's on friday night and place them in my truck and Jane will bring them down on Saturday around 4:00pm or Dan will take them on Saturday morning at the starting point. See you Friday evening.

I want to extend a sincere 'thank you' to those Team Riverlea folks who helped me out following our mishap south of Lake White on Saturday. Your roadside words of support and phone calls about my condition were greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Mike for driving me to Portsmouth, and to Larry for giving up the return leg of the tour to drive me back to Columbus on Saturday afternoon. I'm glad that the rest of you were able to safely complete the tour on Sunday. And had it not been for Patty driving my car in the first place, I would not have experienced such good fortune. My wife, Peggy, also extends her thanks for your help. It made her a lot more comfortable knowing I was in good hands enroute to Columbus. Turns out I did break my wrist, had surgery at Riverside about 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, was home that evening, and was able to go back to work on Monday. I saw my therapist this morning, who fitted me with a really cool 'removable' plastic cast with a zipper, so physical therapy can start next week. All is going well with the recovery, in fact, I am typing this message quite well using both hands. I hope to see you all on the road in a few weeks. As far as a new bike goes, those dreams faded away once the Percoset wore off. The old bike looks repairable. Best regards and thanks again to all.

I've been running and crossx skiing to maintain some semblence of cardiovascular integrity - as I was tearing around the block test driving bikes I heard "du, du, da, du, can't touch it!" rocking in my head - however I realize "slow home Alabama" will more than likely be my cadence on Sunday!      Saturday afternoon was great but Sun AM doesn't look so good. High winds, rain, temps in the low 20's overnite and a high in the low 30's during the day - sounds like ice and trouble. The ride is cancelled. If things change in the AM, I will revise at around 7AM.

Just wanted everyone to know that my daughter Deb was released from Grant Hospital yesterday about 4 P.M. She had no broken bones but she had a bad concussion that left her memory fuzzy and she repeated herself with questions for five hours before her mind started to clear around 6 P.M. Sun. We are blessed to know that she is going to be healthy and will need some time to heal. I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for their support, care and prayers and believe me those were true gardian angels (Team Riverlea Riders). Debbie had a great experience meeting everyone on her first ride with the group and she says that she wants to bike again. She will also write a note herself to post on team talk to tell her side of an amazing story. Blessings and Safe Biking. Thanks especially to Ann Berkley for her calm, cool and professional handling of Deb after her fall and later at the hospital on Mon-she is a true sweetheart and a great caregiver, friend and biker angel. Deb will forever remember that. Deb's wish is that everyone enjoys a safe and enjoyable TOSRV ride.

Hello fellow riders! I'm still buzzing from the natural high of completing 1/2 TOSRV - I can't imagine the euphoria if I had done the whole thing! Maybe next year I'll find out! It was a great day - amazingly the rain didn't seem to put a damper on anyone's attitude. I learned that bicyclists are extreme optimists - and I really like that. THanks to everyone for all the encouragement and positive regard along the way! I began the day thinking I can't wait for this to be over and I'll never have to do it again and now I've been bitten by the bug - See you all soon! Anne

Hello from Cleveland Heights, the land where we do have OLN! I've taped stage 15 of the Tour de France and the 3 hour recap of stages 11-15. I'm FedExing them to Chris today and anyone who wants the tapes, contact him and pass them on - I don't care about getting them back. I watched stage 15 live when Lance fell and then got up to win. It was definitely the most exciting race I've ever seen - a must see if you like the tour. I miss riding with TR, but I love the river valley terrain up here. Hope to see some of you on CFC this year.

Hey Team! I hope all is well as the fall approaches and you have been having fun, on the bike or not! I have started working with the Team in Training people of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society this summer and they asked if I knew some riders who might want to ride as escorts for runners in the Columbus Marathon on Oct. 19. It would entail a SLOW ride and some perks. They have about 100 runners and want to take good care of them. If you are interested, give me a call, 818-9544. I will be gone from Sept. 13-23 on the American Explorer tour, with Adventure Cycling, in Virginia. You can call after that or email me back and let me know. Thanks and Safe Biking.

All - I sent this note today to Charlie Pace and the COP office. I've seen too many friends drop out of TOSRV, and I've even thought about it, so here's my attempt to correct what I think is the problem -

A Modest Proposal for TOSRV
TOSRV Director –

I have ridden TOSRV for 12 years, and hope to do so for many more. I do have a number of riding friends who no longer attend TOSRV, and the primary reason is the route – in particular the mostly unpleasant section of State Route 104 from Chillicothe to I-270. This section of road has gotten increasingly busy over the last 15 years, and particularly in the last 5-7. It has never been especially attractive, not nearly as pleasing as the route south of Chillicothe, but in recent years it has simply become less and less safe as the volume of traffic has increased noticeably.

I would like to suggest for your consideration a new route from Columbus to Chillicothe. Ed Honton’s fine new map collection for central Ohio shows a viable alternative which roughly parallels 104 to the west, yet avoids high traffic roads. From Columbus, the route leaves 104 at Borror Road, and goes south to Commercial Point, Matville, Darbyville and Williamsport, before entering Chillicothe on Egypt Pike. In addition to avoiding the increasingly dangerous 104 this route has the advantage of passing through a handful of small towns which should provide some interest for riders, and new opportunities for local merchants.

This alternate route may add some additional mileage to the total, but I do not believe it would be considerable, and I suspect most TOSRV riders would find the change altogether welcome. I would also be happy to do more research on this alternative if it would be of use.

Thank you for your consideration.
Chris Noble

The event is called the “Ride of Silence” and will take place on Wednesday, May 19, 7:00 pm and will start at the Statehouse in downtown Columbus. We will loop up to OSU campus and back. Started in Dallas, Texas last year as a memorial ride for a cyclist killed when struck by a car, we in Columbus are joining at least 20 other cities this year with the same goal, to remember lost friends from Ohio and remind the driving public and politicians that bicyclists have rights too. May, national bicycling month, is a good time to reach out to the community and advocate for our cause. Groups that are joining us include Columbus Outdoor Pursuits, Westerville Bike Club, Delaware County Friends of the Trail and the Central Ohio Bicycle Advocacy Coalition. Please come on down to the Statehouse that evening and be part of a history and a cause that is close to all of our hearts. Safe Riding, Randy Bennett

Well I did manage to go to the wrong Olentangy school last weekend, and even the short ride I did attempt was cut off by rain. Weather permitting I'll be at the Zoo Saturday at 8. There is just the one Zoo, right?

Name: Dan
Date:    Apr 30, 04
Hopefully, two rides this weekend. The Zoo ride starting at 8AM Sat and the Top of Ohio on Sun 8AM starting from the Hilliard Muny Bldg on Scioto Darby Rd. Exit I-270 at Hilliard Cemetary Rd, go west, that road becomes Scioto Darby, shortly Hilliard Heritage Middle School will be on your right and shortly thereafter is the Hilliard Municipal park on your left. We will ride in the rain for both of these rides. See ya.

If you see fit, please pass this note on to others in your club. Thank you. On Saturday, May 1, Bob Bachtel, an experienced bicyclist and a long-time member of the Stark County Bicycle Club, was struck and killed by a vehicle while participating in a bicycling event in Dayton, Ohio. Bob was making a left turn, and the motorist violated the law by crossing a double-yellow line to pass bicyclists who were properly signaling for the left turn. The bicyclists were obeying the law. The bicyclists were sharing the road. If a motorist had been signaling for a turn, would the driver have slowed down and properly shared the road with the other motorist? Bicycles are vehicles, according to Ohio law, and subject to and protected by the same motor vehicle laws. Bob lost his life because motorists do not realize they should share the road. This is not a case of a bicyclist turning in front of a vehicle, it is a case of a motorist who violated the law and struck another vehicle that was turning. Bicyclists and motorists must learn to share the road. Now is the time to write to your local State Representatives and Senators and urge them to pass Ohio House Bill 245. This Bill provides for the issuance of a “Share the Road” license plate to fund Ohio’s publication, “Ohio Bicycling Street Smarts”, and to educate motorists and bicyclists alike that sharing the road is the law. Sincerely, Mike Abrams Secretary Ohio Bicycle Federation www.ohiobike.org

NEWS FLASH FOR ALL TOSRV RIDERS FROM TOUR DIRECTOR CHARLIE PACE: Due to increasing concerns about the trucks on SR 104 from Columbus to Circleville we are anticipating a new route in that area for TOSRV the first change since 1962. The new route will go south on High Street from Cap Square to the first road south of SR 104 to Deming Ave. Then to Lockbourne and on south to Circleville. Bob Allen and Steve Barbour checked out the new route and we were very pleased with what they found. We think you will be too. We hope you all will return for TOSRV 2005 to try the new route!      Hi guys. Just wanted to let you know that Beth and I are doing well so far. The riding conditions have improved significantly yesterday and today with temperatures moving upwards from the 50's into the low 70's and the rain finally ceasing. We will be on the outskirts of Eugene this evening. Bikes and legs are adjusting to the varying terrain as we managed 60 miles yesterday with the same anticipated for today. We've even managed to catch a fairly strong tailwind both days. I'm sending this message from a library in Harrisburg, Oregon. Will keep you advised from time to time regarding our progress. Thanks Dan and Al for all your advice. Dan, I have to agree with you regarding the size of those logging trucks. We began close encounters with them the second day of the trip. More later.

Jan/Beth It's great to hear you are off to a good start. Enjoy the climb up McKenzie Pass and the downhill into Sisters. There was a guy there named Jim Everett who offered a hostel for bikers. If he is still around it may be worthwhile to look him up in the local phone book. I'm anxious to hear your next posting. Al

We'll be in Idaho tomorrow! Hate to leave Oregon, though. It's a beautiful state and bicycle friendly. For the most part we have had wide shoulders and bike lanes in towns. We are in a town called Halfway and have ridden a little over 50 miles from Baker City today. We still have about 17 miles to go to set us up for the next climb tomorrow. We just finished a 6.5 mile fairly steep (at least in my mind!) climb in 90 degree heat. Took us two hours - five stops! We just finished drinking about two gallons of water so we're ready to push on. Having a wonderful time seeing our beautiful country. We'll check in again in about a week.

Hello everyone. We are now in Dillon MT. Spent last nite in a very small cabin in Jackson MT. Mosquitoes everywhere. The lodge and cabin were all heated geothermally by an artesian hot water supply. Beautiful ride this morning into Dillon. Nice long downhill after two fairly brief climbs. Numerous road crossings by what appeared to be small prairie dog like critters. So far none of them has attempted to run between our tires on our downhill descents. Everything is continuing to go well with the bikes, trailers and motors (us). We are planning to meet with Sue, Greg, Forest and Willow for supper this evening in Dillon. More later. Thanks for the messages.

We are in Houghton, New York. The weather has been delightful so the riding has been enjoyable. We thought we would check in to say hello to everyone since we found a computer in the hotel lobby. John, Dan, and Wanda - the Friday ride will meet at 12:30 pm in Utica by the bike path. See you there? The golf has been beautiful. We golfed at a course along Lake Erie and in the Allegheny Mountians. It doesn't get any better than that. The golf tubes have worked wonderfully on the trailer with the rest of our gear although we have thrown things away daily to continue to lighten the load. Stay safe on the roads. Hopefully, we will find another chance to check in along the way. Chuck and Jane

Chuck & Jane called at noon today (7-11-04) from Syracuse, NY. Their trip is going smoothly, with golf games sprinkled liberally between the riding miles. Weather has been fine for them: a bit of rain, humidity, warm temps ...sounds like Columbus. They are meeting a lot of other bikers both local and touring folks. At this point they are running a bit behind schedule so plan to get a rental to fast forward a hundred miles or so to meet up with friends in Maine a week from now. They expect to fly back 7-25. ...Happy Pedaling and Safe Travels to the Mabrys!!!

We are 28 miles from Colorado and trying to survive the hot Wyoming afternoons. We've been starting early and finishing our day by early afternoon, so it hasn't been too bad. Today is a rest day - we just rode 18 miles from Saratoga to Riverside. We're setting ourselves up for the big climb over Hoosier Pass - 11,500 ft. It will be the highest point on our trip. We'll ride 50 to 60 miles the next three days and then go over the pass on Monday. We're told the climb is long but the grade is decent (Dan and Al, do you concur?), so hopefully we won't have too much trouble. We took a day off in Yellowstone and linked up with a van tour of the Park. When we went through on our bikes the next day we had a close encounter with a bison! He was on the shoulder on our side of the road. A car stopped to take a picture, so we used it as a shield to get around him. We miss everyone in Ohio. Hope everyone is having a great summer.

Jan and Beth, sounds like you are going strong and can only imagine the views. We just returned from a DOWNHILL bike ride of Kilawea and it was incredible. Lance Armstrong trains there, of course he goes UP the mountain. He's nuts! Keep on pedaling.

Jan & Beth, You guys are making good progress. Hoosier pass is a good climb but overrated in my opinion. You have had tougher ones already. Enjoy the cooler elevations because it gets hotter when you decend out of the mts into eastern Colorado and the plains. Thanks for the updates, It's enjoyable to relive the trip with you. Al Chuck & Jane, Bike touring and golf, what a great combination. Now, a hole-in-one after a 100 mile day on the bike with a tail wind, that would somthing to hope for. I hope it comes true. Have fun. Al

Wish you were here on the farm for Grevy's 50th birthday. We are having close encounters with hogs. Have you seen any running pigs? All of the dorm stories are coming back to us and you are in many of them. Sherri's watching for you to pass by her house on the ride to east coast. Keep pedaling!

We came out of the mountains about a week ago after crossing Hoosier Pass which we renamed several times during the climb. The downhill side was a lot of fun of course. The day after the descent we continued downhill travelling another 77 miles to Canon City, Colorado. Judging from the contours on our map we dropped about a mile in elevation that day. We've moved on from encounters with Bison in Yellowstone Park to a close encounter with a sunbathing rattlesnake alongside the highway near Pueblo, Colorado. Fortunately the snake was more interested in continuing to nap than in bothering us. Beth and I are now in Nickerson, Kansas (about midway across Kansas on Rt. 96). Contrary to popular belief Kansas is not entirely flat. Also, my somewhat gimpy sense of smell still works a bit particularly when downwind from some of the large cattle stockyards in the state. The state is beautiful in its own way and seems in some ways similar to Ohio. It's nice to see more greenery and corn fields than sage brush as was common in the more arid areas that we passed through. The cooler temperatures and rainy weather a few days ago caused us to hide in a motel as necessary until riding conditions improved. When you are wet and cold and beginning to shiver a bit you begin quickly reviewing the early signs of possible hypothermia. Fortunately the motel had cable TV. Now we are seeing the temperatures turn hotter again. Moderation would be good but no such luck yet. Odds and ends trip statistics: Longest daily mileage - 97 miles. Shortest daily mileage - 18 miles. Average miles per day - approximately 55 to 60. Number of flat tires - 8 (so far) caused mostly by thorns. Number of tires replaced due to problems - 3. Impressive sight, other than the scenery - a huge RV towing a Hummer. Favorite foods - anything not securely fastened down. We suspect that we've lost weight but have not had access to a scale to confirm. More later.

We finally found a library that was open when we were in the area! We are in Booneville, KY (foothills of the Appalachians)with about 630 miles to go to Yorktown, VA. We're getting a late start this morning because of dense fog. Had a great visit with Beth's Dad and Mom Sunday-they drove Berea to meet us at the historic Boone Tavern Inn. Things are going well. Jan nicknamed Missouri "Misery" because of the very steep hills in the Ozarks. We had a record low speed of 2.7 mph! Had to walk the bikes a short distance three times because traffic was piling up behind us! Crossed both the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers on a ferry. We are really enjoying our trip but also eager to get home. The fog has lifted - let the pedalling begin!

On 8/29/04 we reached Yorktown. What an adventure! We are home now and attempting to adapt to life off the bikes. Every day except for 3 since June 9 we were on the bikes. All the states along the route seemed to have their own personality. The hills in Missouri and a few in Kentucky and Virginia we would just as soon not revisit but will live in our memory for quite some time. The last few days of the ride after leaving Blue Ridge Parkway were beautiful but busy with the traffic around Richmond, Va.. The ride along Colonial Parkway was very enjoyable but a bit sad in that it was the last stretch of the ride for us. Just wanted to let you know that we survived the trip and appreciate use of this website to stay in touch. Thanks again!

Hi everybody, Remember me? Sorry I have been out of contact for awhile. Jane and I have been occupied with our house sale and downsizing these past months. It wasn't fun but we are now in an apartment temporarily until our new condo is ready. I hope then to have all kinds of riding time available and rejoin the team. Currently however, I took the month of September to take another two wheel journey. This cycle has a large engine and is alot more comfortable than the Canondale T2000. It is a Harley V-twin 88 cubic in.(1450cc). Plenty of power and alot of room to carry stuff. I rode to Hilton Head SC and met Jane for a week, then left for Idaho to visit my son Dave via Nashville to visit my daughter,Sarah. All really just an excuse to ride my Harley. I spent yesterday travelling through the Smokey Mts National Park and camped along a river last night. I'll try to post some updates along the way. Al

I added a map link for the Mid Ohio ride this Sunday in Delaware. The ride starts in Mingo Park which is just east of Route 23, but I think the best way to get there is to get off Route 23 at Route 36 / William St., go left under the bridge, and then right at N. Union St. Go north to E. Lincoln street and turn right into the park - look for the shelter house, or all the other crazy bikers!

The COP ride on Sun, Top of Ohio starts at either Hilliard where there is no distance option between 30 and 80 or we could start at Milford center and can do a 50 mile option. Lets do that, and lets start at 8:30AM. The weather report doesn't look good but lets be positive. See you Sat.

I thought I'd post an update here today, although there's still a lot we don't know. My dad had a biopsy Friday, and he is recovering from that. They have mentioned the likelihood of physical therapy for a number of days to help him regain his stability and mobility, but the details are not yet set.

The official meeting with his lead contact Dr. May is expected soon; we believe today or tomorrow. That will be the point when the complete diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan will be described. Until then we know just the sketchy details, so I’ll add more as we learn more.

I will be riding the single this year for TOSRV. I've gotten a few miles in on my own, including my recent marathon the beginning of April. Sorry, no tandem. Doug is going to sag and is also hoping to ride a little bit this year. We will be hosting the PRE-TOSRV DINNER - invitations will be out soon.

Sunday's ride will be Top of Ohio; some hills to stretch our legs a bit. It could be worse - check out this quote from Team Discovery manager Johan Bruyneel about the upcoming Giro d'Italia:

"I would prefer it to be less hard - I think the makers of this course have lost their minds a bit. Stage 17 - there's no road at the end: it's 5.5 km up a ski slope! We'll be using 34x28/29 gearing - that's not cycling!"

There are two options for Sunday's Top of Ohio ride. I will depart from the Hilliard Community Center at 8 a.m. for a 65-mile route.      Hello fellow Team Riverlea-ites! I am looking for someone who will be riding straight to Piketon this year, while on TOSRV. I want to ride from Lake White to Portsmouth, and need someone to drive my vehicle for that leg of the trip, and pick us (Kay and I) up in Portsmouth. Please contact me at 614.793.2276 or at my email address ASAP! We also have one other rider coming back in our vehicle, and can fit one more if needed. Let Kay or I know if you need a lift from Portsmouth to Piketon. Finally - Kay is looking for someone to pick her bike up at the dinner on Friady, and take it downtown on Saturday morning. Again, please contact us ASAP on that. Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend.

Our special thanks to Kay and Doug Mangette for hosting the pre-TOSRV dinner on Friday evening. It was a great evening to share stories of TOSRV's past and to welcome a few new riders to the group. Congratulations go to Lee Schneider, recipient of the TR 'Silver Saddle' award! Now that TOSRV 2006 is behind us, TR rides do continue each Sunday through summer from Alum Creek Lower Dam, however, start time changes to 8 a.m. Check the TR website for weekly ride information.

I have posted some fotos from TOSRV at:

I also have a short QT movie of Chris as he was noodling into the rest stop in Chillicothe. Not sure how to post it yet - Chris if you email me maybe I can shrink it and forward it on to you. Sorry for the bad lighting under the Key Bank overhang. New camera and the flash appears to be gutless or maybe I was too far away and had the zoom lens racked out. It was kinda dark that morning though, dreary, damp, cold but that certainly did not deter this brave group of cyclists. I on the other hand was warm and toasty in the sag vehicle.

Another year, another TOSRV. A much smaller group this year – the forecast not unreasonably scared off a lot of riders. Registration as well as every stop along the way were not at all crowded. We had 7 riders start together from downtown, with Andy Smith joining after a heroic sprint to Chillicothe. And no rain! We did have a tough headwind all day, but given the forecast, we felt immensely fortunate.

Doug rode north from Lancaster and joined us midway from Lake White and rode back south, proving some much welcomed leadership. Andy & I were once again able to enjoy the ride back north from Portsmouth to Piketon, and that part was fun – 20m tailwind by that point, smooth sailing.

My Dad & Kay, Al & Jane and Sue joined us in Piketon for dinner and that was a nice gathering and the food was… well, filling, as always.

Sunday was weird – with no riders coming up from Portsmouth (Andy got a lift home Saturday evening), it was Kay, Jeff & me. We left early since no one was meeting us at Waverly, and we essentially didn’t see other riders all day. We were among the first at each stop (lunch not really even open), Broad & High just after noon. Got a few sprinkles, but nothing bad.

All in all a very quiet TOSRV, but I suppose the real saving grace was that we got to ride at all – with 100% chance of rain forecast Friday night for the next day, we were pretty happy to stay dry, warm, and safe. Kudos to Kay for another strong ride, and to Jeff – a shoo-in for TeamR’s “most improved” this year!

Hi! One of my friends, Rory was looking for a bike he can race with. My dad, Robert Bussa, told me that I should email Chris Noble and ask him if he knew of anyone who was selling a bike..however, I can't find the contact information, so I was wondering if any of you could help me out. He would like an aluminum frame road bike, 56-59cm, used, and he wouldn't like to spend any more than $250. If any of you know (or have) a bike like this I would be extremely grateful if you would help me out : ) Thanks again, and if anyone has any information, you can either email me at ebussa1@student.cscc.edu or call my dad! Thank Again!!

We would like to thank everyone who participated and helped out with the TOSRV training rides and 2008 TOSRV events this year. While we did not have the best spring training weather we did have a good group of riders each week, particularly for the COP-sponsored rides. Most importantly, everyone rode safely again this year. Special thanks go to Doug & Kay Mangette for hosting the pre-TOSRV dinner in their lovely home, and to Patty Ellick for providing ever-valuable SAG service during the tour. It was great to see some of our old TeamR friends, Al and Sue, and welcome several new riders to our group this year. We hope you join us again at every opportunity. And speaking of opportunities, TeamR rides do continue throughout the summer - Sunday mornings at 8 AM starting from Genoa Township Park at the corner of SR 3 and Big Walnut Road. Hope to see everyone again throughout the summer. Safe riding to all!

Granville Ride tomorrow, Alum Creek Lower Dam parking lot at 9 AM. Let's hope the rain holds off until later in the day.

Those intererested in riding today let's meet at the parking lot at 9 AM to discuss ride options. Weather forecast makes the Granville ride look undesirable. Maybe a 25-miler up through Sunbury instead?

Date:    4/19/09
John I'll be there. A shorter ride might be nice; I have 4 flats of plants to get into the ground today; getting in ahead of the rain would be a big bonus! See you at 9.

Friends - based in no small measure on the very kind encouragement and support of Lee Schneider, I have signed up for the Pelotonia Ride against Cancer this August. I'll be sending out some of their emails for contributions to the cause, but in the interim, the web site is here:

John recommends this as the next Sunday, August 23rd, Team Riverlea ride:

Steve Barbour Memorial Ride
When: Sunday, August 23rd, 2009
Start Time: Assemble at 8:30 a.m. Ride starts promptly at 9:00 a.m.

Where: Heritage Trailhead Parking Lot, Downtown Hilliard, OH

Refreshments Following Ride: Dutch Kitchen Restaurant, Rt. 42, Plain City -11:00 a.m.

We have been able to obtain a permit from the City of Hilliard to conduct a ride in memory of our friend, Steve Barbour, who died as a result of the injuries he sustained when he was hit by a drunken driver on Cemetery Road, July 18th, 2009. The ride, escorted by the Hilliard Police, will proceed from the Heritage Trailhead to Cemetery Rd. where we will have a short ceremony and where we will place a "ghost bike" in Steve's memory. The ride will turn around at the Hilliard Plaza Shopping Center and return to the trailhead. We encourage participants to join the family at the Dutch Kitchen on Rt. 42, Plain City, after the ride. You may ride to the Dutch Kitchen or drive. Steve's family, will host the event at the Dutch Kitchen.

Some suggestions have been made as to how we may best honor our friend. Here are just a few: Wear lights, both on your bike and on your person. Wear a jersey that best "connects" you to Steve, e.g., Dutch Kitchen jersey, TOSRV and any other that you wore while riding with Steve.

In the interest of safety and as good examples to the community, helmets are required and all participants should ride no more than two abreast.

Please forward this e-mail to others who may be interested in participating. If you would like to volunteer for the event, please contact me, Gail Falkinburg at 861-4478. Dutch Kitchen Restaurant

Is anyone planning on doing the Dry Run Ride? I've not done it and wanted to give it a try.

Name: Chris
Date:    8/18/09
I'm signed up for Dry Run, done it for years. I'm sure others will as well; it's a pretty regular ride on our yearly calendar. WBC does a nice job running it, and the routes are always pleasant - hills east if you want them, but not required. As I recall, we rode last year as the remnants of that hurricane were approaching, and had epic headwinds to plow for the last 20 miles or so. Memorable!
